Phonique, the Berlin-based award-winning producer and label owner, reigns as one of Europe’s most in-demand and renowned house DJs. He has produced over 100 releases and remixes for acclaimed labels Dessous, Poker Flat, Crosstown Rebels, Systematic, and his own, Ladies and Gentlemen. His career first exploded in 2004 with club anthems “The Red Dress” and “For the Time Being;” his first album, Identification, earned him global recognition. Phonique’s three critically-praised albums attest to his evolving, diverse influences, deep knowledge of house music, and masterful intuition to serve the dance floor. He is currently producing a fourth anticipated album, as well as working with Timo Maas on original full recording sessions of Nineteenhundred and Eighty-Five, given to them by Sir Paul McCartney, to remix that 1973 recorded hit. Phonique continues to draw huge crowds, invitations to perform around the world, and collaborations with artists across Europe, South America, and beyond.

Phonique’s journey from organizing parties in Berlin during the 90s explosion of underground music to becoming an award-winning DJ is rooted in the history of house music.

Growing up near Cologne, Michael Vater, not yet Phonique, discovered his love for the music scene while working at a local club when he was eighteen. Early on, he became a fan of Chicago house, late disco, and acid house. Sets by the great Sven Väth in the club where Michael worked made a strong impression on him, and he knew that he wanted to follow his love for music, especially his love for the uplifting energy of house.

Moving to Berlin in the mid-90s, Michael fed off the city’s newfound excitement and creativity that erupted after the Berlin Wall fell. He became known as “one of the nice guys” of Berlin’s party scene, throwing massive parties known for their mellow, open vibe. After a while, Michael turned his passion for music and crowd-pleasing into DJing, and Phonique was born. Over the past 20 years, he’s remixed the songs of Zoot Woman, Aloe Blacc, Major Lazer, Imany, 2raumwohnung, Rosenstolz, Juli, Erlend Oye, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Aka Aka, Ornette, Skye (of Morcheeba), and Louie Austen.

Starting in 98, as his reputation as a DJ quickly grew, Phonique focused on bringing up-and-coming DJs and producers to his club nights and parties in Berlin. Some of his most memorable parties included sets by Glen Gunner (Street Corner Symphony/Block 16), Lil Tony (Nu Spirit Helsinki/Guidance), Alexkid (F-Com/Ovum), Llorca (F-Com/Brique Rouge), Joakim (Tigersushi), and Ivan Smaggghe (Blackstrobe/Volga Select). During this time, he developed his signature uplifting mellow sound, which treated crowds to a mix of hip-hop via breakbeat to old school and drum ‘n’ bass. He would play anything that had that smooth type of groove. For many years, he held residences at Tresor, Pfefferbank, and other Berlin hotspots. At the time, the Berlin party scene came to be defined by minimal music, and Phonique would soon come to be known as a master of minimal and deep house.

In 2004, his reputation in Berlin along with his first album, Identification, launched Phonique internationally. The album impressed critics and international audiences alike for its diverse, soulful collection of deep house, minimal house, disco, and downbeat. Three years of hard work would give birth to his second acclaimed album, Good Idea, in 2007. His love for different types of music is clearly shown in this unique compilation of jazz and chill out lounge music and soulful techno floor burners. He would reach the height of his powers with Kissing Strangers, his third album, released in 2010, a rich and warm offering of deep house, infused with quiet emotion.

Phonique’s rise to house music prominence has called him all over the world: he has DJ’ed in over 50 countries. Playing a mix of vinyl records and CDs, he has kept people dancing deep into the morning in Sao Paulo, Helsinki, Paris, London, Marseille, Vienna, Brussels, San Francisco, Prague, Tel Aviv, just to name a few. His music has taken him to Brazil countless times and to over a dozen cities across Russia. He is also the first international house DJ to ever play a party in Bangladesh.

Phonique’s growing international renown has been recognized with four recent awards, including winning Best International Deep House Artist twice at the Ibiza DJ Awards (2008, 2010), and at the Beatport Music Awards (2010). His song “Feel What You Want” won at the Tunisia Music Awards (2013).

His music continues to reach an infinite audience online, with hits for “Feel What You Want” surpassing 20 million views on YouTube. His songs “Our Time, Our Chance,” “Vincent Price,” and his remix of Ornette’s “Crazy” also earned millions of views, and counting.

Phonique continues to produce his music, always experimenting with the smooth groove he loves, as well as producing the music of other artists through his label Ladies and Gentlemen. At the end of 2012, Ladies and Gentlemen released a critically acclaimed house compilation, and will soon release his fourth album. Expect Phonique to continue to mine the depths of house music for years to come.
